Foot Pain While Working

Foot pain while working on your feet is common among people who stand or walk for long hours. This discomfort develops when the feet experience repeated pressure without enough time to rest. Symptoms may include aching arches, sore heels, or tenderness in the ball of the foot. Pain may worsen near the end of a shift and improve after sitting down. Common causes include plantar fasciitis, tendon irritation, and metatarsalgia. Workers in healthcare, restaurants, and construction may face a higher risk, especially when standing on hard floors.

Wearing the right shoes makes a meaningful difference in daily comfort. Choose supportive footwear with ample cushioning, a stable heel, and enough room for your toes to move naturally. Proper fit matters because tight shoes create pressure, while loose shoes allow excessive movement and friction. Replacing worn-out shoes also helps reduce strain. Custom insoles prescribed by a podiatrist may provide additional comfort for your foot structure and work demands.

Stretching your feet and calves help ease muscle tightness and improve flexibility. For a simple foot stretch, sit down, cross one leg over the other, and gently pull your toes toward your shin for 15 to 30 seconds. This stretches the plantar fascia along the bottom of the foot. Calf raises strengthen the muscles that support ankle movement. Stand near a sturdy surface, slowly rise onto your toes, and lower your heels with control. For a runner’s stretch, place your hands against a wall, step one foot backward, and keep that heel on the floor while leaning forward. Hold each stretch comfortably without bouncing.

Pamper your feet at home by resting after work, elevating swollen feet, and soaking them briefly in comfortably warm water. Gentle massage may also ease tension. Treatment options include custom orthotics, activity adjustments, or targeted care for the underlying condition. If you have foot pain while working, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

While working on the feet, it is important to take the proper care of them. For more information about working on your feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Practice. Our practitioners will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Working on Your Feet

Standing on your feet for long periods of time can cause stress and pain in your feet. Your whole body may experience change in terms of posture, back pain, bunions, callouses and or plantar warts. There are ways to avoid these conditions with proper foot care, smart choices and correct posture.

Positive Changes

Negative heeled shoe – Choosing this shoe type places the heel slightly lower than the ball of the foot. These are great for overall foot health. Find shoes that fit you correctly.

Go barefoot – Our feet were not designed to be enclosed for all hours of the day. Try to periodically expose your feet to air.

Eliminate Pain

Foot Exercises – Performing simple exercises, incorporating yoga and doing stretches are beneficial. This will allow increased blood flow to the area and muscles of the foot.

Achilles tendon – Stretching the foot out flat on the floor will relax the calf muscles and tendon. These exercises can be performed almost anywhere. Make sure you add these exercises to your daily regimen.

With a little bit of this information and knowing more about foot health, you will notice changes. Foot stretches and proper footwear will help with pain and prevent further issues.
